Back to life

It's crazy how quickly the years go by, but I am reviving this blog in anticipation of travels abroad and being motivated to document my thoughts.

Big life stuff has been happening, which can be best summarized as below.

1. I got this PhD in neuroscience.
You know, I thought maybe my PhD was going to my last hurrah in science.  When I was going in, I was mentally prepared to say "that was fun but no more" at the end of the experience.  However, I ended up having an amazing time learning and discovering (and making mistakes) in the lab.  It's strange to be on the other end of a 8-year journey and realize that I still want to make research a significant part of my future.  All that advising where I told people it's okay to decide that two-hats is not for you (still true!) and now I feel so lucky to be in a position where I am still looking forward to a way to do both research and clinical work.

2. I am applying into (and interviewing for) psychiatry residency.
Boy did I not think this was going to be the one going into medical school although in hindsight there were so many hints along the way to today.  Third year clerkships definitely was the deciding factor.  I actually enjoyed many of my rotations, especially general surgery, psychiatry, and family medicine.  I did preceptorships in both Neurology and General Surgery to get a better sense if I would like those paths.  At the end of the day, what I liked most was the ability to talk to a patient and learn about their experiences of life and reality and use that holistic understanding to do my best to improve their life.

3. I am going abroad in the spring for a global health rotation in China.
I am extremely excited to be getting the opportunity to see Eastern and Western medicine as practiced in China and for the opportunity to see that in both urban and rural settings.

So maybe it is time for a career change

But in the meantime...

I have not been dead

I have been studying for step 1.

That's probably false advertising.

UCLA NBME: 200
NBME 13 after 3 weeks of lackluster studying (4 hrs daily with 1-2 hrs every 3rd day): 207
Conclusion: school NBME is largely a false confidence booster

morning NBME 12 after 1 week of panic studying (8+ hr per day): offline so guestimated score is ~225.
same day afternoon UWAS 2 (UWorld Self Assessment 2): 250,  ie 230 in reality according to forum people, the premier source of factual understanding of the USMLE pain.
Conclusion: I got better.

First "full" day of clinic

Yesterday was the first day that I was in clinic all day.  By day I mean 9 to 5 pm, so the shortest clinic day for the rest of my career.

More culinary explorations

For Chinese New Years, I made myself an arugula, mushroom, and cheese salad thanks to my balcony plant.  I've never tried balsamic vinaigrette with dijon mustard before, but I was glad to find that it worked well with the mushrooms.
Nothing more Chinese than reheated pizza and salad.
Unfortunately, the cilantro is now dead.  Mom came and aggressively chopped off all the cilantro because they've been ready for harvest.  This made a delicious meal, but made the plant all wimpy in the LA dry heat.

DineLA 2013

My winter DineLA experience was leaner this year than the last.  I just closed my eyes and focus on the future macaroon eating instead.

But no worries, deliciousness still happened.  (In fact, some were so delicious that they could not be captured before their disappearance.

May the LA weather help me keep these alive

Just this past week, four of my friends co-adopted an adorable cat.  And because I cannot allow my sense of grandiosity to be affected by such a vicious attack on my social standing (we are in Psychiatry block right now), I also brought home some new lifeforms today.

All from Hashimoto Nursery
Arugula mid-repotting

All set in their new home (and ready to be eaten)

Ode to Karen Millen and more fashion than you can shake a stick at

So I gave in and finally posted a review for Karen Millen on Yelp...and thought that I might as well also post some of the favorites from 2013 SS and resort designer collections.  Yes, that means seriously photo spamming if you click for more.

The end of the world as we know it

Now that even the Mayans have been proved wrong, it looks like we are just going to have to make our own futures happen without any hope of an end.

To that end, I'm sharing some of what I did to celebrate our continuing lease on life.

Birthday? Birthmonth! (part 1)

Some people celebrate their birthday with a few friends.  Some have a giant party with the police involved.  But you know what all those people are doing incorrectly?  Only celebrating for one day!

Thesis lab decision

Now that it's been a few months since my second rotation, I can say that I have made my decision.

California water shortage

I have learned how to file an insurance claim, and California is now closer to running out of water.

Comic Con 2012

I attended Comic Con for the first time ever this year.  As I was warned, there were a LOT of lines.  However, getting to catch up with your best friend from college, Mi-chan, made the time fly by.  I only bought tickets for Saturday and Sunday, so my tales will be from the crazy weekenders.

Summer Update

Best way to spend a lazy Saturday morning is to refresh my room (for nearly free!).

Something more summery with a hint of fall.

Now I feel like a M2

It hadn't sunk in that I am on to my second year till having dinner with the new MSTP M1s.  There are so few of them next year.  I can only hope that they make friends with each other...

Boston in Summer

The best part of visiting Boston was getting to snuggle with my mom, of which there is no photographic proof (but we both can just close our eyes and see it).  Still, lots of other exciting things also happened.

Farm life is good life

Because of some wonderful friends, I had the opportunity to spend two days on a Vermont farm.  Really, there was so much great company, conversation, and food that I can't even describe the experience properly.  But do enjoy some of the highlights via photos.

Bluer and greener than LA

New Apartment!

The apartment is not quite decorated, but the key places are beginning to take place.  The kitchen and dining area is super important because both my new roommate and myself love to eat good food.

How long will this plant survive?
